The Art of Making Mom Friends

The Art of Making Mom Friends

Creating meaningful friendships with other females is a very valuable relationship. Many of us covet these friendships especially when becoming new moms as they are the entryway into the world of adults. Super important to have while on mat leave.

Sometimes, it's not the easiest to do —even before, well, life happened. Making friends as a new mom? That can be especially challenging.

We sat down with Life Coach and fellow Millennial Mom @liathorovitz to gain insight. "Making friends at a mature age is so hard, but so necessary", says Liat. "It's not only crucial for our mental well being, it also allows us to nurture a connection that is solely for us".

Here are 3 strategies to help avoid the struggle.

1. Consistency Is Key

We should never stop making new friends. Easy to say but hard to execute- and that’s due in large part to the difficulty of maintaining consistency.  Being a new mom on a baby’s schedule can make this particularly challenging.

The requirements of all relationships are positivity (enjoying each other and feeling good), vulnerability (sharing and feeling seen with each other), and consistency (time together).  Consistency is the toughest component but, it’s the most necessary.

What are some ways to help create consistency? Enrol in a weekly mommy and me class at Orange Dot Lucy or join a workout class at Barre3 (a little something for you too) that offers daycare.

2. Ask For Intro’s

People feel most supported in life when the people we care about – our friends, know each other and can interact together in caring ways.

One of the easiest ways to establish meaningful mom friend connections is through the introductions from you current friends.  So, go ahead and ask your friends to take inventory of their pals who are due around the same time as you!

3. Be Bold

We are wired to feel connected to others, so we have to be willing to put ourselves out there.  Remember, you are not alone in the search for mom friends, this is a common new mom challenge.  No matter how scary or nervous you may feel keep leaning into connection. It is a proven that we are safest when we have a net of people in our lives.

A few of our favourite outlets to feel connected with other moms – Momjo two moms who invite you into their daily motherhood journeys (Liat is the co-founder),  MomsTO who have chapters across Ontario and Mommy Connections has groups across Canada.
