Fun (Free) Activities You Can Do Outside With Your Kids
Getting outside has so many benefits! Fresh air, physical activity, a chance to blow off some steam but it also benefits our kids health too. Outdoor play can increase sensory skills, contribute to social and emotional development and increase attention spans.
To get everyone out the door, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite activities everyone can enjoy outside, free of charge. Lets slather on the sunscreen and head out!
1. Have A Picnic
What better way to take advantage of a sunny day than with a picnic? Plan to dine al fresco in your local park. The components of a picnic lunch are so easy to make that the kids can do most of the work themselves. To make carrying all your items easy, load them in a wagon and have the kids take turns pulling it.
We recommend the Radio Flyer Tailgate Wagon – a classic wagon that’s perfect for towing gear and kids. Need a more compact option? Try the Radio Flyer E Z Fold Wagon.
2. Volunteer In The Community
Start them early when it comes to giving back to the community. Helping others is one of the best ways for kids to build strong morals. Let your kids pick an organization they’d like to learn more about and make a plan to volunteer together and get involved.
3. Plant A Summer Mini Garden
A special way everyone can spend time outside is by planting together. This activity involves all 5 senses. It encourages physical and mental development by allowing your child to look after what they’ve planted and feel the importance of taking care of our planet.
A few of our favourite mini garden accessories for kids are: Williams Sonoma Kids Garden Kit, Paint Your Own Stepping Stone, Roca Gardening Tool Set
4. Break A Sweat With Your Kids
We all know the benefits of exercise- it helps ward off disease, prevents injuries, boosts mood, improves sleep and helps maintain mental health. Getting outside to break a sweat with your kids will also demonstrate to them a healthy lifestyle and teach work ethic. It’s a great way to spend time together as a family.
A few of our favourite gear items that are a must when looking to exercise with kids include: BOB Stroller – great for running and handling various terrains and the Ergobaby Omni 360 Mesh Carrier for a hands-free power walking session or a much-needed putting-baby-to-sleep session.
5. Get Crafty For A Cause
Pull out some fabric and start print matching and colour mapping in the backyard! Project Linus Canada provides home made blankets in any size to babies and kids in need. Your family can get crafty by quilting, knitting or sewing a warm virtual blanket hug to to a baby who needs a little extra support.
