The Download On Rebelstork x BCorporation

You guys heard the BIG news that we are so proud of, Rebelstork has been approved to become a Certified Pending BCorp.  We started this long approval process basically right when we launched, but it has been an integral part of our business plan since years before that.

We have been getting some great questions from you, our FLOCK wanting to learn more about what becoming a BCorp means and, why this was such an important focus for us internally to achieve.  So, we sat down with our Rebelstork founder Emily, to pick her brain on why building a BCorp is so important to her as a leader and what it means in our current retail environment for todays consumer. (BTW...have we ever told you that our founder is a trained and certified trend forecaster?  That she used to guest lecture students at one of the most prestigious Fashion Institutes in NYC?....we will tell you more about this another time).

1) What exactly does becoming a BCorp mean?

Certified BCorporations are a new kind of business that balances purpose and profit.  They carry legal requirements to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community and the environment.  BCorps are a community of leaders, driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good. Those who go through the rigorous certification process (which can take years) are pledging their commitment to their values and demonstrating to other businesses and their customers their dedication to being a values-driven business.

2) Why was becoming a Pending BCorp so important to the Rebelstork business model?

When I set out to build Rebelstork I knew first and foremost that I wanted to build a better business, one that is different than what currently exists in the baby gear space.  I wanted to create a value driven business but, I also wanted to have guidance along the way to help me do it. Being aligned with BCorp allows Rebesltork to accomplish these goals.  So, I decided to build Rebelstork alongside the BCorp principles from the very beginning, imbedding their culture into our corporate structure from the start.

It was also very important to me that Rebelstork stand out in the midst of this “sustainability revolution" that is going on in the retail industry. By becoming certified, we aim to help consumers be able to sort through all the environmental marketing hype out there and find the legit businesses that are actually socially and environmentally responsible.

3) Why was becoming a Pending BCorp so important to you as a millenial start-up founder?

Starting your own company can be a lonely experience at times. Regardless of your past work experience or confidence level there are extreme highs of success which sometimes are followed by dives of disappointment.  For me, being part of BCorp is like having a community of like-minded older siblings who are cheering you on and available to help.  Rebesltork is part of a bigger BCorps community all working together to create positive change and greater awareness.

4) Why do you think supporting a BCorp is important to consumers?

I think supporting a business that is legally and credibly sustainable is becoming more and more important to consumers. Claiming to be sustainable and using the word in marketing is not being accepted by consumers who are learning to question it and expect more. As companies are pushed to become more transparent, consumers are becoming much more educated and aware of the impact in their choices.  You can see this happening by the number of large global brands that are putting resources in place to work backwards and change their current corporate cultures in hopes of acting sustainable and aligning with the BCorp guidelines.
